Think back to an interaction between a nurse (or nurses) and a service user and/or family members which you observed on in a TV drama, soap opera or documentary:
- What did the nurse(s) do?
- What was the purpose of the interaction?
- What communication skills did they use during the interaction?
- Was their communication facilitative or otherwise?
Now think about professional communication:
- Did the interaction reflect this aspect of health communication?
- Did their communication enhance collaboration and shared decision-making?
- How did the service user and/or family member react?
On reflection and with the knowledge about communication you have already acquired, how might reflecting on this interaction enable you to transform your own collaborative communication style?
